Porch swing

Porch swingIf you are in the market for a new porch swing, there are a few things that you need to look for:

  • First of all, it is important to do a sitting test with any porch swing before you decide to buy it. Do not just sit in it for 10 seconds. Try to go for a full 5 minutes so that you can really tell if it is the right one for you.
  • Consider the width of the seat of your porch swing. You do not want a seat that is too wide (therefore not allowing you to sit fully back into the seat), nor do you want a seat that is too short. Again, be sure to do a sitting test!
  • Make sure that the slats of the seat are sloped slightly downward toward the backrest. Not only will this make your porch swing more comfortable, but it will also allow any rainwater or dew to roll off, keeping your seat dry.
  • Make sure that the backrest leans slightly back. If it is too upright, is likely not going to be comfortable. Consider whether you want a tall backrest or a short one.
  • Wide armrests are often more comfortable than skinny ones. Skinny armrests can cut into your arm. Also, a wide armrest can be used to balance a drink or plate when you are not swinging.
  • Make sure that your porch swing as been assembled with screws, not just nails! You want your porch swing to be as sturdy as possible.
  • Lengthwise supports beneath the chair will make your chair sturdier.
  • Cedar and oak will weather better than other woods like pine and maple, but they will also cost more. You can keep any softwood swing in good condition by painting it or at least staining. You may also decide to keep it under a covered porch.
  • Consider buying a cushion for your porch swing. Not only will it add a bit of style (there are many possible colors and styles to choose from, and you can even order one that specifically suits your style), but it will also make your swing more comfortable.

When hanging up your porch swing, make sure that you have enough supports. Some swings can seat up to three people, and as such they can get pretty heavy!

If you do not see any porch swings that you fall in love with at the store, consider making one yourself! You can make one out of an ordinary chair or bench by sawing off the legs and attaching a support system. Feel free to be creative with your porch swing.
